FORT LANDING, THE LITTLE ALLIGATOR RIVER

My last blog was not finished. I must have hit a wrong key and off it went into cyberspace.  I was writing about going to one of the few restaurants in town only to find that it was closed. However there was a private party going on and we were invited to join in. It was the local biker club meeting in progress. What more can I say? The night got late.  Quite a way to close out the night after the wild weather we had earlier that evening.

Oh, yes. I did mention that one of the reasons we stopped in Belhaven was for our mail.  I managed to get a ride to the post office and picked up a good sized package of mail forwarded from the Milford PO.  When I opened the package I was surprised to find that none of the mail in the box was mine! How's that for efficiency?  If you recall I mentioned that a few weeks ago I received only one piece of mail that had been forwarded. I called our letter carrier at home and said that there was quite a bit of mail forwarded to Beaufort, SC.  Friday Sue called the Post Office (Beaufort, SC) and found that there was another package that had not been picked up.  She was told that we would have to pay to have the mail forwarded to somewhere along our route of travel.  They return the mail to the sender if the mail is not picked up in fifteen days so the mail will be sent back to the Milford PO.  Who knows when and if we will ever see that mail. The good news is that our letter carrier called yesterday to tell us that our mail was still in the Milford PO and never was sent out... That is one of the very few downsides of our journey.

The weather calmed down overnight and we were able to get underway fairly early. We hoped to go farther but decided to work our way up this little tributary and set the anchor for the night.  There is absolutly nothing around here so we expect a quiet night under a full moon.  We are able to get local TV reception and were astounded to see the news reports of the devistation last nights storm caused in eastern North Carolina and Virginia. We were very lucky to get away with severe thunderstorms in Belhaven that bred quite a few tornados close to our location.  In fact the one swing bridge we had to have opened today was operating on a generator. The area we are headed for tomorrow was also feature in the news because of the damage the storm caused. The problem is that there is no other route to follow to avoid going through Elizabeth City and then on to Deltaville, VA in two days. I guess you can say that is all part of our adventure.

Y'all stay vertical,

Capt John and First Mate Sue

  1. I wondered whether you were caught up in that weather mess. Fortunately it looks like you were nicely oblivious to it all. I think that as of today 22 people were killed. Here in Texas all we want is some of that rain. We have the winds but nothing else. Wildfires are a real threat across the state and especially where we live in the piney woods.

Will you see Colby soon? Seems like you are chugging your way in his direction.

Hope your mail catches up to you soon.

  2. RE your mail, just imagine what a great job they'll go with our healthcare! And would love to hear more about biker night, my kind of people. My guess it was a bunch of Harley owners?
