The voyage up the ICW to Southport from Little River, SC was one of the most nicest days on the water since we started. The scenery was a pleasant change from the lowlands with more homes, more trees and more activity on the water. We will be going through another change in conditions as we head north. We can expect more inlets/outlets to the Atlantic Ocean, changing tides and strong current to contend with and I am looking forward to being underway.
There were two reasons why we planned on stopping at the St James Marina. We wanted to visit with Ken and Donna to see their new home and we had our mail forwarded here for pickup. Unfortunately Donna had to be back in Milford and the mail didn't get here. Ken showed us the house that will become their new home once they sell their house in CT. The St James Plantation is quite a place. There's over two thousand homes in this gated development along with four golf course plus this four hundred and seventy five slip marina. Sue and I were here with Ken and Donna four years ago when we exploring the area as we were considering leaving Milford. Obviously Ken and Donna liked it here, they are both serious golfers as is their daughter and son-in-law. The marina is first class but the immediate cruising area is limiting as I see it. I'd like to be in a place with more options for cruising. Otherwise this place is far enough south to still have four seasons and that's a plus.
As for the mail, Ken said we are at the very end of the pony express route and mail delivery is very slow. Apparently the Plantation had their own nonunion mail delivery system and locked heads with the US Mail letter carriers union. The union prevailed and the 'attitude' is slow to recover. Whoda thought? Hopefully we will have our mail Monday and be underway early Tuesday morning. On the plus side, I have been able to make some progress with our IRS return during this delay. It's all part of the adventure!
Y'all stay vertical,
Capt John and First Mate Sue.
